Fynbos

Cape Floral Kingdom blend

Cape Floral Kingdom essential oil blend, aromatic, antioxidant

Fynbos is the distinctive vegetation type of the Cape Floral Kingdom — a UNESCO World Heritage biome covering the Western Cape and parts of the Eastern Cape. Over 9,000 plant species, roughly 80% endemic. The blend we use draws from three of the most aromatic — buchu, helichrysum, and rose geranium.

The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest and proportionally most diverse of the world’s six recognised floral kingdoms. The biome is fire-adapted; many fynbos species cannot germinate without periodic veld fires. This is one of the reasons sustainable cultivation is challenging — the plants are evolutionarily tuned to wild-harvest cycles.

The science

The three oils provide complementary scent profiles and aromatherapy properties. Buchu (*Agathosma betulina*) has documented antimicrobial and diuretic activity in traditional use. Helichrysum (*Helichrysum italicum*) is well-studied for skin healing applications. Rose geranium (*Pelargonium graveolens*) is the major commercial essential oil from the Cape Floral Kingdom and a source of the rose-floral character of the blend.
