Lavender
Lavandula angustifolia
Primary aromatic in VV-12; parasympathetic-activating linalool source; well-documented sensorial calm
Lavender essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops of Lavandula angustifolia. Its primary active constituents are linalool and linalyl acetate, which together account for 60–80% of the oil's composition. Linalool in particular is the focus of most clinical research into lavender's effects on anxiety and sleep.
The distinction between true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) matters commercially. Lavandin is a hybrid — higher yielding and cheaper — but has a sharper, more camphoraceous smell and a different linalool-to-camphor ratio. Many commodity lavender products contain lavandin or a blend. VV-12 uses true lavender only.
Altitude matters in lavender production. High-altitude Provençal lavender (above 800m) is considered the quality benchmark: slower growing, lower yield, more complex and floral ester profile. The altitude stress appears to increase ester content relative to lower-altitude equivalents.
Lavender is one of the oldest cultivated aromatic plants. Its use in sleep and anxiety management predates the essential oil industry by many centuries — the name itself derives from the Latin lavare, to wash, reflecting its historical use in bathing.
The science
Lavender's effect on sleep and anxiety is among the most evidence-backed claims in aromatherapy. A 2015 systematic review in the *Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine* (Lillehei and Halcon) found consistent positive effects across 15 controlled studies. A randomised controlled trial published in *Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine* (2015) demonstrated measurable improvements in sleep quality in ICU patients following lavender inhalation. The proposed mechanism involves linalool's partial agonism at GABA-A receptors — the same receptor targeted by benzodiazepine anxiolytics, at a much lower agonist potency. At 2% in VV-12, the concentration is meaningful — sufficient to deliver a genuine inhalation dose from a pillow spray over the first hours of sleep.
